2011年06月，申办第八届全国城市运动会城市花落福州，2013年12月经国务院批准，正式更名为第一届全国青年运动会。
2014年10月17日，The 1st Youth Games of the People's Republic of China第一届全国青年运动会组织委员会成立大会暨动员大会上，国家体育总局局长刘鹏、福建省委书记尤权为运动会揭晓主题口号、会徽、吉祥物。
中华人民共和国第一届青年运动会The 1st Youth Games of the People's Republic of China即首届全国青年运动会开幕式于2015年10月18日在福州海峡奥林匹克体育中心举行，2015年10月27日举行闭幕式。
该工程由中建海峡建设发展有限公司投资建设，CCDI悉地国际（原中建国际）设计，获得了2014-2015年度中国建设工程鲁班奖。
